Eating on Wartime Rations

I have always had a fascination with history, especially domestic life.  The obsession started when a family member sent me the little house series.  Once I was introduced to Laura and her family, there was no going back.

I would force my friends and siblings to play "old times" out in the backyard with me.  We would pretend we were pioneers and living on the frontier.

My ideal outings were visiting historical sites and homes.  Any place that replicated how people used to live made me ridiculously happy.  When I discovered all the historical reality shows: the house series (1900's house, 1940's house, pioneer house) I thought they were the greatest shows ever.  I dreamt of being on a show like those.  a Couple years ago I came across The 1940's experiment, a blog about a woman trying to experience what culinary life was like during wartime rations, I was inspired.  I wanted to try it for myself.

The 1940's have always been one of my time period interests.  I was intrigued by how they were able to get by on such limitations and pull together for the greater good.  (I really don't see that ever happening again.)  It is amazing the creativity that came out of this time period, not just in food but in styles, and just basic day to day living.

It is my mission to experience as much as I can of the time period that is my current fascination.  So I challenged my self to live on only what was available during WWII on the British homefront.  I myself am from the U.S. I am aware that the U.S. was on rationing as well, but there is something about the spirit of the British home front that fascinates me.

Starting July 31st, 2017, I will be documenting my meals for the week. Discussing my successes and failures as well as sharing interesting information I find along the way.

Wish me luck!
