Day 1 Rations
For day one I kept it really simple. I am excited to start this and see how it feels. I know I won't truly know. There isn't the uncertainty of what will be available when.
Today didn't seem too difficult. The biggest thing was not snacking. Normally you can wander in to the kitchen and just grab a little something. It is a lot different when you know what you have has to last you the whole week.
Breakfast
For breakfast today there was oatmeal, cooked in water with a little milk and honey. Honey wasn't rationed in war time but could be hard to come by if you lived in the city. Luckily I live in a small town with lots of farms, and those farmers have bees! So I would have had access to honey. It is a nice replacement for sugar. I am also breaking out my teacups and teapots. It's makes it a little more fun, specially since I will be having very repetitive breakfasts.
Lunch
Lunch was really simple, 2 slices of tomato, a couple thin slices of cheddar cheese and a bit of butter on the bread. It was good and super filling.
Dinner
I tried a recipe I found at Lavender and Lovage. She had a recipe from a pamphlet put out by the Ministry of Food. The main part of the meal was a sausage roll.
The Sausage roll
It is a very strange looking concoction. It is mostly the meat of 2 sausages and a lot of bread crumbs. There are some onions and stock as well. It wasn't too bad, but it was really salty! The side dishes consisted of a baked potato with gravy (from a packet) and steamed green beans from our garden (aka Safeway).
I also made something sweet, This is no-bake chocolate cake. It is more like a chocolate rice crispy treat in my opinion. I used really dry breadcrumbs, so it has a very crispy texture and extremely crumbly. You uses a lot of coco powder I found the recipe at 1940's Experiment.
